Can you believe that this is the 9th week of kindergarten? Hopefully, your child is loving school and you are seeing some of that growth that I believe is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching kindergarten.
This will be a review week for all academic subjects, as I will be doing one on one assessments with the students. In addition, the children will be exploring some traditional kindergarten centers and writing about their experiences during our writing block.

Speaking of writing, it is a VERY complex process. Have you ever considered all that is involved when you write down a thought or what your child is learning to do?
Students are learning to:
a. generate a thought
b. put it into a complete sentence so that it makes sense
c. determine the letters that match the sounds in the words they want to write or recall the spelling of those words
d. recall the proper formation of each letter and how to position it on the lines
e. utilize capitalization, spacing, and punctuation
At the time of progress reports, many children were writing using random strings of letters. But now they should be starting to use their knowledge of letter sounds in their writing. Because the process of writing is so taxing, many children will default to letter strings when writing by themselves. It is helpful to practice "stretching out" words with your child when they are not writing to help them build confidence. When your child is writing with you, encourage them to write at least the beginning sound and then draw a line for the remaining letters. They can come back and fill in the letters later.
