CVC Words and Sight Words
This quarter we will work on building your child's sight word vocabulary and their ability to blend CVC words. These skills should be practiced at home and school.
Sight Words - These are words students learn to recognize by sight. True sight words cannot be sounded out because they do not follow phonics rules (ie. the, do, one). In class, we will call them the "naughty words" or "rule breakers" because they don't follow the rules. Here's a technique to practice
1. Write out word on an index card
2. Extend non writing hand out infront of you while holding the card.
3. Place your writing hand on your arm and slide it from shoulder to wrist as you read the word 3 times.
4. Spell the word, tapping once for each letter down your arm. Then read the word again while sliding your hand from shoulder to wrist. Do this 3 times.
(repeat 3 times)
Video one to demonstrate the process.
Click here to see the process in action.
CVC words are closed syllable words. The vowel has a short sound and is "closed" in by two consonants thus the pattern consonant-vowel-consonant. It is actually best to practice writing and reading these words together.
1. Say the word "cat"
2. Child repeats "cat"
3. Stretch the word by saying the first sound, dragging the vowel, saying the last sound. /c/ /aaaa/ /t/
4. Have child identify each letter. "What letter says /d/?" "What letter says /o/?" "What letter says /g/?"
5. Have child tell you the 3 letters to spell cat. "What 3 letters do you need to spell cat?" cat
6. Have child write cat (check for proper formation)
7. Have your child read the word cat from an index or a book.
