A Word About Math
For the remainder of the quarter the math instruction we will be primarily focused on visualizing and representing addition and subtraction situations as well as solving them.
We have described Addition as "composing," putting numbers together.
We have discussed 3 different types of composing problems:
1. Adding to an established group (I had 3 rocks.I found 1 more. How many rocks do I have?)
2. Joining 2 separate groups together (I had 2 smooth rocks and 2 bumpy rocks. How many rocks do I have?
3. Determining all the ways to make a group when the addends are unknown ( I have 5 rocks. Some are bumpy and some are smooth. Show all the ways my collection might look).
Students need to be able to visualize the math so they can model and draw out the math. Number labels are especially important to help ensure accuracy in math sketches.
