We have officially entered the last quarter of Kindergarten! It is amazing to step back and consider how much each student has grown and learned in this short amount of time.
We will be continuing to work on skills to strengthen reading. You can try the following activities at home:
Visual and Audio Drills are Helpful!
Visual Drill - Show your child a flashcard with the letter(s). Child should respond with the name and the sound.
Audio Drill - Say, "Tell me the letter that makes the sound ___. Child responds with the name and the sound.
* If your child knows all 52 letter names and their sounds (including soft c and g) you can start doing drills with digraphs (wh, ch, th, sh, ck), l-blends (bl, fl, gl, pl, sl), r-blends (br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr, str), or vowel pairs.
Blending Sounds to Make Words
Write out simple words with 3 letters. Have your child touch each letter and drag the sound into the next. You can play with real or nonsense words.
Spell Words with 3 letters
Ask your child to spell simple 3 letters words. Say the word, have your child repeat it and then stretch the word by saying each sound slowly. Finally have your child write the letter that matches each sound.
The more opportunities you give your child to read and write, the more practice they get. With more practice, they will become better readers and writers!
We will also continue strengthening computation skills. We will work on representing and solving the 3 types of addition situations and the 3 types of subtraction problems.
Addition: adding to, joining, and missing numbers
Subtraction: take away, compare (how many more), missing numbers
Upcoming
Report Cards - Thursday, 3/23/17
Spring Break - April 3 - 7
