Level 1 Limited: Student drawings do not clearly represent people and intended objects and/or students are still learning letter names, sounds, and formation.
Ways to Help - On-line drawing lessons and practice labeling pictures with beginning sounds. Write the words to match your child's thinking (model sounding out words)
Level 2 Progressing: Drawings show likeness to people or objects intended. Students know most letters and sounds and can use that knowledge with support to sound out cvc words. Students can write a sentence with some support.
Ways to Help - Practice verbally rehearsing sentence, counting the number of words, and stretching out words to write them. Stress finger spaces to separate words.
Level 3 Meeting the Standard: Drawings show likeness to people or objects intended. Students use knowledge of phonics to sound out words and sight words to independently write sentences.
Ways to Help - Reinforce capitalization and punctuation and finger spaces. Encourage children to provide more information by writing more sentences or adding more detail.
